Armchair BEA Day 2!

Tuesday, May 27, 2014
It's time for Day 2 of Armchair BEA! Today we'll discuss author interaction as well as talk about books in different formats. Let's get started!

Author Interaction

I've become so much more able to talk to authors since I've started blogging, especially through Goodreads. Posting my reviews on Goodreads has gotten me some author attention by people like James Patterson, and has given me the opportunity to chat with the likes of Lauren Oliver! I'm not going to lie and say I kept a level head whenever this occurred. I basically had a meltdown and keyboard smashed before going and writing an appropriate response. The comments authors give me provide a healthy dose of motivation, such as when Laurie Halse Anderson liked one of my reviews! The one author I've never interacted with that I would REALLY like to is John Green. Not only is he my favorite author, he's basically my favorite person, and my role model. Being able to talk to him would be a dream come true. If it actually happened, I actually might cry. So, if anyone has close contact to John Green, let me know. XD

Books in Different Formats

I don't dislike books in different formats, I just haven't read many, but let's talk about some that I have, and some I plan on reading.

The first stand-out book that I've read in a different format are actually two books, done the same way by the same author:

and:

both of these lovely books are told through both full-page black and white drawings and text. The thing that I love about them is that the pictures actually tell the story. A chapter could begin with some words, and then the story would carry on with the images. There was no text to accompany them, it was up to the reader to infer what was going on. I thought that was really clever, and made reading all that much more fun!

Another format is Manga. For those of you who don't know, Manga is a style of japanese comic books and graphic novels, and a popular reading format. I don't generally read Manga, but as of late, I've been getting really into anime, a style of Japanese movies and TV shows, and most anime have a corresponding Manga, so I'd like to read and watch it! For example, I've recently fallen head over heels in love with the anime Attack on Titan, so I'd like to read the Manga.

Also, I'd like to read the Death Note manga:

Well, that's all I have for today! Let me know what you think about my post today in the comments, and leave a link to your own Armchair BEA posts so I can check yours out! I'll see you all tomorrow. :)

I've read 1 manga and was surprised how quickly I picked up the reading style

I've done a happy dance for a few authors who have contacted me either by email or through social media.

I love the opportunities that blogging provides me. Connecting with authors no matter how infrequently it happens for me is still such a great experience. I haven't gotten into manga though.

My boys are wanting to watch Attack on Titan...but I'm worried it's too intense for 10-12 year olds. It's easy to find books for them to read, but I know nothing about manga and anime, and am daunted!

I have Hugo Cabret on my bookshelf waiting to be read. Glad you liked it so much! While I've read quite a few graphic novels, I haven't read any manga. I'll have to give it a try. For some reason I'm intimidated by it!

Happy Armchair BEA!

Kristina- That's encouraging, because some of my friends have said it's a difficult genre to read.

Donna- You are not alone, Donna. Not at all. :D

Sandy- It really is. Blogging definitely has perks. You should give manga a try!

Benedict- Yeah, the rating is actually TV-MA. It's a lot of blood and gore. It's very good, but I would recommend you tell them to wait until they're older. XD I wish I could help more but I am a newbie to anime and manga. Sorry!

Trish- I hope you enjoy it! I'm intimidated by it too, but you have to face your fears. :D Happy Armchair BEA to you too!

Thanks for stopping by everyone!
